GitHub makes starring a repository effortless. That is useful when you discover a library, tutorial, or tool you may need later. It also creates a predictable problem: after a few years, the starred page becomes a reverse-chronological list of decisions you no longer remember making.
The solution is not to classify every repository perfectly. That turns a bookmark problem into a maintenance project. A useful system has to make capture cheap, retrieval reliable, and cleanup optional.
This guide describes a workflow that still works when your collection grows from a few dozen repositories to several thousand.
Start by deciding what a Star means
A GitHub Star is public. It can mean appreciation, a reminder, a recommendation, or simple curiosity. Those meanings should not be forced into one private workflow.
Use two layers:
- Stars are the broad collection. Keep using the GitHub button without interrupting discovery.
- Your working library is the smaller active set. Add private notes, status, and deeper indexing only when a repository is likely to matter again.
That separation removes the pressure to process every Star. An unclassified repository is not a failed task. It is merely a bookmark that has not earned more attention yet.
Preserve the reason before the repository name fades
The most valuable field is usually not a category. It is one short sentence answering: Why did I save this?
Useful notes look like this:
- “Candidate replacement for our Redis-backed job queue.”
- “Good explanation of Swift structured concurrency cancellation.”
- “Check the license before using the parser in a commercial app.”
- “The README contains a clean local RAG evaluation example.”
These notes contain vocabulary from your actual work. Months later, searching for “queue replacement” is more likely to recover the right repository than remembering its owner or product name.
Do not turn notes into summaries of the README. The README already exists. Record the relationship between the repository and your problem.
Use a small status model
Folders and tags describe what a repository is. Status describes what you intend to do with it. A small status model is enough:

| Reading | Worth investigating now | Read docs, test, or compare |
| Adopted | Used, referenced, or deliberately retained | Add a durable note |
| Deprecated | Rejected, replaced, or no longer relevant | Keep the reason, hide from active views |
The important state is often Deprecated. Deleting the Star loses the memory that you evaluated the project. A short rejection note prevents the same research from being repeated six months later.
Build tags around decisions, not the ecosystem
GitHub Topics are useful public metadata, but they describe projects for everyone. Personal tags should describe how you expect to retrieve projects.
A practical vocabulary mixes three kinds of tags:
- Domain:
infra/database,ai/rag,ui/swiftui - Intent:
learn/later,use/now,reference/architecture - Constraint:
local-first,self-hosted,commercial-safe
Keep the vocabulary small. Before creating a new tag, ask whether an existing search term or GitHub Topic already solves the problem. If you cannot predict a future query that needs the tag, you probably do not need it.

Organize incrementally instead of scheduling a cleanup weekend
Bulk cleanup feels productive and usually fails. A collection of 2,000 Stars cannot be converted into high-quality personal metadata in one sitting.
Use three small loops instead.
Loop 1: annotate on retrieval
When search brings an old repository back, update it immediately:
- add the missing note
- correct one tag
- set the status
- remove it if it was saved by mistake
You are already paying the cost of understanding the repository. Capturing the result takes seconds.
Loop 2: review the ambiguous slice
Do not browse the entire library. Filter to a manageable group such as:
- repositories with no note and no personal tag
- Stars older than one year that you never reopened
- projects marked Reading for more than 30 days
- inactive repositories you marked Adopted
Review ten, not two thousand. Stop when attention drops.
Loop 3: process new Stars in batches
Once or twice a week, skim the newest additions. Only promote the repositories that deserve private context. The rest can remain plain Stars.
Match search mode to the question
No single search technique works for every memory.
- Exact full-text search is best when you remember a package name, API, framework, or phrase from a README.
- Structured filters are best for questions such as “Swift repositories I marked Adopted” or “local-first tools with a private note.”
- Semantic search helps when you remember the problem but not the words, such as “a lightweight queue for background jobs.”
- Repository-grounded Q&A helps when the answer spans several saved projects and should cite where each claim came from.
Start with exact search because it is fast and predictable. Use semantic retrieval when your wording is uncertain. Use AI answers only when you need synthesis, and require citations back to the repository evidence.

Keep private metadata independent from the GitHub cache
Repository names, descriptions, Topics, and star counts can be fetched again. Your notes, tags, status, and organization rules cannot.
Treat those two kinds of data differently:
- Rebuildable cache: GitHub repository metadata and README snapshots
- User-owned data: private notes, personal tags, status, collections, and settings
Back up the second group even if you are comfortable resyncing the first. A good export should remain readable outside the app and should not depend on an active subscription or server account.

Use AI as an assistant, not the source of truth
AI can reduce repetitive work:
- propose a concise repository summary
- suggest existing tags
- identify likely platforms or technologies
- answer a question across indexed READMEs
It should not silently rewrite personal metadata. A plausible but wrong tag applied to hundreds of repositories is worse than leaving them unclassified. Keep generated summaries reviewable, require confirmation before applying tags, and make it clear which text came from a model.
A 20-minute setup that scales
If you are starting today, do this:
- Pick four statuses: Unread, Reading, Adopted, Deprecated.
- Create no more than ten personal tags.
- Import or sync your Stars without trying to classify them all.
- Add notes to the ten repositories you use most.
- Save one view for unreviewed recent Stars.
- Export the library once and confirm you can read the file.
- From now on, annotate repositories only when you revisit them or promote them into active work.
The goal is not a perfectly cataloged archive. The goal is to recover the right project when a real problem appears.
